The first company, TUMA ENGENHARIA TÉRMICA LTDA, was founded in 1971 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Its main activity was the installation and projects of systems of central air conditioning and ventilation. It conquered important industrial customers such as steel mills and mining companies – Mannesmann, Usiminas, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, Acesita and Belgo Mineira, by offering a product with differentiated technology and quality.

TUMA has conquered important clients also in other segments, such as Diários e Emissoras Associados, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Federal University of Minas Gerais), Telemig and Embratel, showing from the beginning a vocation for competitiveness in different markets due to a focus on development of projects with a high level of engineering and specifically developed to answer the particularities of each customer and a high level of energy rationalization.

Since the beginning of its activities TUMA has never been restricted only to the city of Belo Horizonte market. In its first year it already performed works in the cities of Vale do Aço (Steel Valley) and from its second year it already worked in Brasilia, Vitória and São Paulo markets as well as in the ones of cities in the interior of Minas Gerais (state). In its third year it also worked in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1972, the TUMA stood out with the development of technology for application of air conditioners, comfort standard, to be used with 100% of external air. This technology was applied for the first time in the Surgery Block of Hospital Militar de Belo Horizonte (Belo Horizonte Militar Hospital).

Even in 1975, just four years after its foundation, it had already a diversified role not only in relation to the types of work performed, but also to the areas that the company worked in.

In 1976, only 5 years after its founding, it made the air-conditioning system for the headquarters of Banco Central do Brazil (Central Bank of Brazil) in Brasilia, a work with capacity of 3461 TR. With energy, creativity and technology, TUMA was recognized by the market and kept on expanding boundaries of business.

Some great national and international projects with TUMA participation:
- Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Station;
- Tucurui Hydroelectric Power Station;
- Air conditioning for Morro Velho gold mine at 2,400 m depth, including exchange of technology with South Africa, which, besides Brazil, is the only country that has experience in the air conditioning at this depth;
- Participation with Grumann, the American company that developed the project of Lunar Module, in the application on earth of space technology for conservation of food through hypobaric containers;
- Participation in projects and works in the desert of Iraq along with Construtora Mendes Junior;
- Implementation of works in Paraguay, Argentina and Venezuela;

The year 1989was another important year in the history of TUMA because it moves to its own headquarters, the TUMA BUILDING, located on Avenida Raja Gabaglia, 1686 in Belo Horizonte. With the increase of work in some areas, some branches were created in some capitals as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Luis and Manaus.

Confirming its constant concern for the environment, in 1989 TUMA accomplished the installation of first work of air conditioning in Brazil with the use of ammonia, ecological gas, as refrigerant fluid. This installation was in Edifício Comercial (Commercial Building) - Headoffice Building of Telemig in Belo Horizonte – MG.

In some of these cities the constant increase of business and the need to better meet the demands of local markets led the creation of local companies controlled by TUMA ENGENHARIA (TUMA ENGINEERING), but with self and independent administration. That decision had as its main objective make it easier the decision-making process and strengthen further more the presence of TUMA nationally.

Thus other companies start offering Tuma solutions, commercially operating with the same philosophy, in 1984: TUMA ENGEMAC INSTALAÇÕES TÉRMICAS (TUMA ENGEMAC THERMAL INSTALLATIONS LIMITED), based in Salvador, Bahia. Soon after, in the year 1985, it was the time of TUMA RIO INSTALAÇÕES TÉRMICAS LTDA (TUMA RIO THERMAL INSTALLATIONS LIMITED), headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. In 1986, TUMA SÃO PAULO INSTALAÇOES TÉRMICAS LTDA (TUMA SÃO PAULO THERMAL INSTALLATIONS LIMITED), headquartered in São Paulo, and META MEDEIROS TÉCNICAS ASSOCIADAS LTDA. (META MEDEIROS TECHNICAL ASSOCIATED LIMITED, headquartered in Recife, Pernambuco.

As the concern of TUMA was always innovate in technology and provide greater energetic efficiency creating global solutions for its customers, the company started, alongside its activity in the area of air-conditioning and ventilation, to develop technology also in the area of heating water through solar energy.

In this sector TUMA was pioneer in Brazil when launched the first solar collector, manufactured in Brazil, in 1975. In 1978 , the company launched the second generation of solar collectors.Also in1978developed the first project of air conditioning in Brazil for cooling in deep mines, fitting the air conditioning for Morro Velho gold mine in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, with the installation of cooling towers at a depth of 2,290 m and acclimatization of 56 km of galleries.In 1980it developed the first collector of Brazil with structure made of extruded aluminum (aluminium, UK) profile, especially developed for use in solar collectors, ensuring a superior quality to the product.
All this pioneering and investment in technology enabled TUMA to accomplish, in 1980, the installation of 440 m2 of solar collector with the purpose of heating water for industrial process in the old Philco Indústria Brasileira of Semi Conductors and achieved the replacement of an 800KW electrical boiler. This work was inaugurated in 1981 and at that time it was one of the three largest in Brazil.

TUMA is chosen as technical responsible in Brazil for DORMAVAC project developed by Grumann Allied, the American company that developed among others the project of Lunar Module and the fighter aircraft F14 and operated in Brazil by the Group Tratex - Conflor. This project takes the technology developed for special flights for preservation of perishable foods on earth. The conservation is achieved in vacuum and with control of gases originated in the maturation of the food and avoids the freezing.

In December, 1984, TUMA inaugurated the greatest work of solar heating for water in Latin America, in the General Army Hospital, in Sao Paulo with an area of 900m2 of collectors, producing 45,000 liters of water at 50° C per day. Besides providing large facilities such as Philco, the investment in technology simultaneously provided a cheaper product without losing the quality in order to make it accessible to small residential installations.

This growth in the sector of solar energy in TUMA culminated with the need for creation of TUMA INDUSTRIAL LTDA, in 1987, to dedicate exclusively to the manufacturing, installation and commercialization of solar collectors.

After some time, TUMA INDUSTRIAL, because of its vocation to invest in technology, started dedicating to the manufacturing of air conditioners for special applications in steel mills and the manufacturing of electrical panels.In 1993TUMA TECNOLOGIA (TUMA TECHNOLOGY) was created in order to develop electrostatic filters with high-efficiency and low-noise level and residential cowls having the electrostatic filter as the filtering element.

The phenomenon that occurred with solar energy was repeated in the sector of maintenance of air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Since the beginning of its activities TUMA has also devoted itself to the maintenance of the systems that it installed. The success of this activity and the volume of this type of service were so much that, in 1976, it was created EMAC ENGENHARIA (EMAC ENGINEERING), with the exclusive purpose of carrying out maintenance services. Once again TUMA chose to create separate structures, to work in different areas and answer each customer in a more personalized way.

Emac, like Tuma Engenharia (Tuma Engineering), has grown and has branches spread throughout the country what make it easy the service to customers of any size everywhere in Brazil.

TUMA COMERCIAL (TUMA COMMERCIAL), another company of the group, was established in 1985 and operates in the commercialization sector of hydraulic materials and sanitary metals. In 1996, the company took stockholder control of its largest competitor, PB O PONTO DO BOMBEIRO (THE PLUMBER POINT) being consolidated then as the largest dealer of hydraulic materials in Minas Gerais.

EMAC COMERCIAL (EMAC COMMERCIAL), another company of the group, has operated in the commercialization sector of pieces for cooling since 1982. The company acquired in 1998 the franchise of one of the largest commercialization networks of materials for cooling of Brazil, the TOTALINE.

In 2001, some facts continued being remarkable in the history of TUMA. Besides the numerous works accomplished, the company made the application for two patents for inventions regarding the energy crisis of the country. The ‘AQUAQUECE’ (‘Aqua’ is similar to ‘água’ = water; ‘aquece’ = to heat), which provides hot water from the gas stove, and ‘MISTURADOR DE ÁGUA APARENTE TUMA (TUMA APPARENT WATER MIXER’), for the use of a solar energy system in houses without the need for reforms in the bathroom to embed the hot water pipe.

Those inventions were selected by FINEP (Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos, a financial institution for studies and projects) and MCT (Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia, Federal Department of Science and Technology) as products with innovative technology in the area of ENERGY. These projects were incorporated to the Feira de Inovação Tecnológica em Energia (Fair of Technological Innovation in Energy), organized by MCT / FINEP on 10 capital cities of the country.

In 2002, TUMA developed the project CEOOT. A converter of energy from ocean waves which uses the waves of the sea for the generation of electricity, based on a completely innovative technology in the world, with required patent, which will enable the generation of energy coming from waves at a reduced cost, making it economically feasible its implementation in several places of the world.

2004 was undoubtedly one of the most special years of TUMA history. It began with the Creation of Central Modular de Co-Generation TUMA- CMCT (TUMA Co-generation Modular Central System) and the partnership with BROAD.TUMA launches the CMCT – Central Modular de Co-Generation TUMA, result of the effort and investment of TUMA in research and development to make the Co-generation more technically and economically viable. With state-of-the-art technology, smaller engines and modular system, CMCT provided, besides logistical gains, the feasibility of co-generation for small size undertakings, being no longer a viable solution only for large enterprises, becoming applicable in factories, buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, gas stations, residential condominiums and others.

Along with the co-generation project, TUMA becomes the exclusive distributor in Brazil of the line of liquid coolers by absorption BROAD of 4.6 to 6614 TR, with lifetime of 20 years, highest COP in the market, simultaneous production of cold and heat, which operates with exhaust gases, natural gas, diesel, steam, hot water, exhaust gas and solar energy.

The equipment BROAD offers high efficiency, automation and control system with access via the Internet, free operation supervision for 20 years, equipment for high capacity, low consumption of gas and reduced height.
It was also in 2004 that TUMA received for the sixth time the award Highlight of the Year Smacna, this time with a novelty, TUMA has for the first time two-awarded works, one of them the work of installation of air conditioning of Telemig Celular Arena. This work has a total capacity of 688 TR, and aimed to increase the comfort of users of the Arena. The challenge presented to TUMA was the deadline for completion of the work. As the arena was in use and with the league games already scheduled, it was essential that the work were performed with minimal interruption possible, and as the previous existing ventilation was already disactivated, the events could not occur before the air conditioning comes into operation. Once again TUMA showed agility and efficiency, finishing the phase of mounting the work in only 15 days.

The second work of TUMA awarded in 2004as SMACNA highlight of the year is the work of acclimatization of Centro de Arte Contemporânea Inhotim (CACI, Inhotim Contemporary Art Center. With total capacity of 97.5 TR, Tuma opted for a solution in this work that we have no news of similarity in Brazil. The system of dehumidification via reheating, using the hot refrigerant gas and high pressure that comes from the compressor discharge and before that it reaches the condenser, so that the function of reheating starts to be executed without any additional consumption of energy. If it was used a reheating conventional solution, the energy consumed in this reheating would be about approximately 3 times the energy needed for cooling, what  would make the project economically infeasible.
With more than 3 decades of existence, TUMA enterprises continue writing a great history in the development of the country, thanks to their pioneering, investments in technology, ability to search and mainly the respect for the environment, the law, the collaborators and the population.

TUMA team works with the certainty that the incessant search for efficient solutions and with quality, which meet the needs of the market, will bring many chapters to this history...

We count on you to be part of this history.
